Youth Training Campaign to Reduce Marine Plastic Debris in RUTS Trang Campus​

Marine plastic debris is a major environmental problem, particularly in coastal areas. The Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS), Trang Campus, is located on the coast of the Andaman Sea. A portion of the campus is a beautiful beach. 

Although the campus has a policy and action plans to reduce plastic waste on campus, during the monsoon season, the beach often has a lot of plastic waste. This is due to the influence of waves and currents that carry plastic waste in the ocean to accumulate on the beach.

The Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS), Trang Campus, Thailand, has launched a youth training campaign to reduce marine plastic debris and clean beaches. The campaign includes a variety of activities, such as educational workshops and beach cleanups events.

The event was conducted by Assistant Professor Aneak Sawain, together with Asst. Prof. Pornthep Wirachwong and Marine Science and Environmental Science Department students, Faculty of Fisheries Science and Technology. The training and practical workshop on marine debris survey and beach cleaning were provided to 135 high school students, teachers, and staff members from Benjamarachutit School, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, who came to the Andaman seashore to learn about the coastal ecosystem and environmental conservation. 

As mentioned above, the activity comprises a presentation about the impacts of marine debris, particularly plastic waste, on marine life and the environment in the sea.
