The Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS), in collaboration with the community of Libong Island, Thailand, organizes the fourth RUTS Marine Science Camp for high school students from Surat Thani, Phang Nga, Krabi, and Trang provinces, Thailand. The camp aims to promote activities related the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14: Life below water.

On February 11-12, 2023, Mr. Prachum Charoenrit, the village headman of Village of Libong Sub-district, lectured on the history, cultural heritage, and current status of seagrass ecosystems, dugong, and other aquatic animals, such as sea cucumbers, mollusks and crabs that rely on seagrass habitats as their sustainable habitats. The lecture also included suggestions for the conservation and sustainable utilization of coastal resources for the 23 youth participants.

Assistant Professor Pornthep Wirachwong, along with fellow faculty members and students of the Marine Science and Environmental Science Program at the Faculty of Fisheries Science and Technology, RUTS, have actively engaged the youth in a series of diverse activities focused on the protection of marine and coastal ecosystems. These activities included:

– Disseminating knowledge about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), explicitly emphasizing SDG 14; life below water.

– Conducting comprehensive lectures on the significance of seagrass ecosystems.

– Undertaking research concerning the coral reef environmental system on Libong Island.

– Investigating the behavioural patterns of dugongs within the seagrass bed.

– Implementing seagrass rehabilitation programs to restore seagrass habitats in the Libong Island area.

Youth participants in the RUTS marine Science camp acquire comprehensive insights into the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, coastal, and marine resources. They also have fun and are impressed by the Libong Island community’s spiritual beauty, which welcomes and shares knowledge with the youth throughout their involvement in this marine Science camp.
