Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya recognizes the importance of promoting conscious water usage outside the university by collaborating with agricultural cooperatives and stakeholders in Trang Province to implement Internet of Things (IoT) technology for sustainable water usage management in agriculture. This project aims to reduce energy consumption and mitigate the impacts of climate change which will be reflected to the quality and the use of water. The development of IoT technology enables an irrigation system that can monitor and control water usage automatically, effectively reducing water and energy waste such as IoT-enabled water meters provide real-time data on water usage, allowing users to track and adjust their consumption as needed. Smart irrigation systems can use weather data to adjust watering schedules automatically, ensuring plants only receive water when needed and soil moisture sensor system can irrigate based on actual needs, reducing excess water use in agriculture and landscaping etc. Moreover, this technology helps decrease greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural practices.
All the trained farmers under this project gain and build knowledge about IoT technology in sustainable water usage and resource management. Also, the guidance on using the IoT technology is provided for the farmers that it reduces water and resource consumption, minimizes environmental impact, and helps local farmers better adapt to climate change. This project exemplifies sustainable development through the integration of technology in the community by implementing IoT in water conservation efforts empowers communities and individuals with data, insights, and automation to make more sustainable water-use decisions, especially, to enhance the use of smart technology to promote resilience among agricultural communities in southern Thailand.
