The Faculty of Architecture at Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya, in collaboration with Hat Yai Municipality and the Southern Architects Commission under the auspices of the Association of Siamese Architects, has organized the Healthy City and Co-Design Initiative.
On December 25, 2023, Pol. Lt. Gen. Sakorn Thongmunee, the Mayor of Hat Yai, delegated responsibilities to Mr. Phakhanan Pratumchatchakdee, the Chairperson of the Hat Yai Municipal Council, alongside council members from District 3 and heads of governmental departments. The initiative, led by the project development team for Hat Yai’s sustainable livability and the public space innovation team for exercise, collaborated with community networks, including the Salalungthong Community, Rim Kuan Community, Thesaphatana Community, Khlong Rabai Nam 1 Community, and Phor Phrom Community. A meeting was conducted to enhance community capacity in managing public spaces for exercise within the Salalungthong area, focusing on the co-design of exercise spaces and activities for individuals of all ages, held in the Salalungthong Community (27 Phetkasem Alley), Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province.
The activities promoted physical exercise and included aerobics, petanque for the elderly, and a “Big Cleaning” initiative for the gym and exercise equipment to restore them to operational status. This initiative will provide the community with an additional space dedicated to physical exercise and recreational activities. The efforts received collaborative support from Dr. Kwan Piengchareon, Chairperson of the Southern Architects Commission, Mr. Watcharin Chantharak, and Dr. Chila Kaewprak, faculty members of the Faculty of Architecture at Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya.
Community Engagement, the collaborative nature of the project fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among community members. Engaging local residents in the design and management of public exercise spaces strengthens community ties and enhances social cohesion.
Sustainable Urban Development, the initiative aligns with sustainable urban planning principles, integrating exercise spaces within community designs. This promotes environmental sustainability while addressing public health needs.
