The Faculty of Science and Technology at Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya is working closely with Thung Song Municipality on a city development plan that centers around a community-driven model. This model is designed to empower local communities to take an active role in shaping the future of their region. The project encompasses 20 distinct communities, including Talat Nai, Thung Song-Huai Yot, Thung Song-Na Bon, Prempracha, Ratchaboriphan, Yutthasat, Ban Nai Wang, and Tha Pha Nuea, among others. Each of these communities plays a key role in contributing to the overall vision for Thung Song’s development. Dr. Prasert Nonthakarn and Asst. Prof. Dr. Worawitoo Meesook, both experts from the university, lead brainstorming sessions and workshops that engage community members. These sessions focus on analyzing local needs and identifying innovative approaches to city planning. The active involvement of the communities ensures that the development plan is tailored to the specific characteristics and priorities of each area. This bottom-up approach makes the initiative unique and emphasizes the importance of grassroots involvement.
The 20 communities participate in SWOT analyses to assess their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Through this process, residents create development plans that are specifically tailored to their local needs and concerns. The primary goals of these plans are to promote conservation, restoration, and sustainable development within each community. Key areas of focus include reducing the impact of climate change, studying and conserving local biodiversity, and fostering creative cultural arts. These community-driven plans aim to preserve the environment while enhancing cultural heritage and economic opportunities. By incorporating the voices and knowledge of local residents, the development strategy becomes more effective and sustainable. Additionally, the collaboration provides a platform for continuous learning and exchange of best practices between communities, fostering a sense of unity and shared responsibility for Thung Song’s future.
