On December 19-20, 2023, Lecture Kaewsuda Butphean lead art students from the Visual Arts Program at the Faculty of Architecture, RUTS, in a workshop titled “Artists in Residence” at the Songkhla Art Museum. Under the theme “HOUSES: Colors of Songkhla,” this workshop will feature two German artists, Alfred Banze and Christine Falk, who will guide the students through the creative process. Participants will have the opportunity to select their own projects inspired by the rich context of Songkhla, which aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. One group will focus on developing paintings that reflect their individual identities, drawing from their surroundings in the Old Town. Meanwhile, another group will photograph locals engaged in various activities, which will later be combined to create a collective artwork that showcases their unique perspectives on the community. This initiative not only fosters creativity but also promotes cultural exchange and sustainable urban development through the arts.
Furthermore, the project may stimulate local tourism by attracting visitors to the exhibition and the Songkhla Art Museum, thereby contributing to the economic development of the area. Overall, this workshop serves as a platform for personal expression, cultural dialogue, and community engagement, enriching the local arts scene and enhancing the students’ artistic and professional development.
The creative outcomes—individual paintings and a collective artwork—will not only showcase the students’ artistic identities but also highlight the diversity of experiences within the community, which advocates for sustainable cities and communities.
The workshop’s theme, “HOUSES: Colors of Songkhla,” emphasizes the importance of local heritage and environment. By documenting and interpreting the local context, students contribute to the preservation and promotion of Songkhla’s cultural identity. The collaborative nature of the workshop encourages teamwork and collective creativity, helping students develop important interpersonal skills and fostering a spirit of cooperation. The resulting artworks and exhibitions can raise awareness about local issues, history, and culture, attracting visitors and stimulating interest in Songkhla Old Town as a vibrant cultural hub.
This project also encourages cultural exchange between local students and international artists, fostering a greater understanding of different artistic practices and perspectives. By focusing on the theme “HOUSES: Colors of Songkhla Old Town,” participants will delve into the local culture and heritage, promoting awareness and appreciation of Songkhla’s unique historical context.
