Urban Planning Program at Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS), the Urban Planning program at the Faculty of Architecture, RUTS, is dedicated to preparing students to address contemporary urban challenges through a sustainable lens. This program aligns closely with Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11), which emphasizes making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
Educational Experience: Learning Beyond the Classroom, from December 20 – 22, 2023, faculty members and students from the Urban Planning program organized an experiential learning project in Penang, Malaysia. This initiative aimed to provide students with practical insights into urban planning processes and challenges in a diverse urban setting.
Workshop Activities: Exploring Urban Systems, during the second activity, a workshop on urban surveying was conducted, focusing on several key learning areas:
– Transportation Systems, Students learned about the transportation infrastructure of both Thailand and Malaysia, comparing and contrasting their respective systems to understand regional differences and challenges.
– Population Movement, The workshop explored the processes involved in the movement of populations through border checkpoints, emphasizing the complexities of cross-border migration and logistics.
– Transport Hubs, Participants examined how transport hubs are established, focusing on multi-modal transportation systems that integrate rail, road, and waterways to facilitate efficient movement.
– Heritage Conservation, Students engaged in discussions on the conservation of UNESCO World Heritage cities, learning strategies to maintain the historical and cultural significance of urban environments.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration, the Urban Planning program emphasizes collaboration among various disciplines, equipping students with the skills to think critically and innovatively about urbanization. By participating in this field study, students gained firsthand experience in sustainable urban development, which is crucial for addressing the complexities of modern cities.
Through initiatives like the Penang study trip, RUTS’s Urban Planning program not only enhances students’ academic knowledge but also prepares them for real-world applications in sustainable urban development. The program aims to cultivate professionals who can contribute positively to the enhancement of urban environments, aligning with global sustainability initiatives.
