Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RMUTSV) has established a firm commitment to wildlife conservation, specifically concerning the protection of elephants, which are a keystone species and hold significant ecological importance in Thailand. As elephants are listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, their preservation is both a national priority and a critical conservation concern. RMUTSV’s policy integrates wildlife protection into its academic programs and research efforts, highlighting the university’s dedication to addressing conservation challenges. On August 17, 2023, this commitment was further solidified through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in collaboration with the National Elephant Institute under the Royal Patronage. This MOU was facilitated by the Forest Industry Organization’s Director, Mr. Sukit Chanthong, and the National Elephant Institute’s Director, Mr. Suratchai Inwisate. The agreement was signed with RMUTSV’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, represented by Dean Asst. Prof. Dr. Theerawit Chanthit, aiming to foster collaboration on research, medical training, and conservation efforts with a specific focus on elephants. This partnership reflects RMUTSV’s proactive approach to integrating conservation principles into both its policies and practical applications. Through this agreement, RMUTSV demonstrates its role in the broader mission of elephant conservation and environmental protection across Thailand.
The MOU emphasizes collaborative research and academic advancements in veterinary science, particularly as it relates to the healthcare and conservation of elephants. As part of this partnership, both RMUTSV and the National Elephant Institute are dedicated to enhancing veterinary practices through targeted training and research initiatives. The collaboration focuses on equipping personnel with the necessary knowledge and skills to improve care practices for elephants while advancing conservation science. In addition to training, the agreement fosters an exchange of expertise that will benefit both organizations by supporting projects that address health issues and environmental challenges impacting elephants. Faculty, researchers, and students involved in this program will gain hands-on experience, enhancing their proficiency in conservation-based veterinary practices. This collaboration not only supports RMUTSV’s conservation policy but also reinforces its academic foundation in veterinary medicine. The partnership is expected to generate innovative approaches to elephant healthcare and conservation, preparing a new generation of conservationists with specialized skills. Such cooperative efforts are vital for addressing the complex needs of elephants and ensuring their long-term protection.
The partnership’s commitment to sustainable conservation practices aims to impact the larger ecosystem in which elephants play a crucial role. Both institutions will undertake activities to monitor elephant populations, restore natural habitats, and raise public awareness about the importance of elephant conservation. The shared objective is to foster sustainable solutions for preserving elephants, which ultimately supports broader environmental stability. RMUTSV’s involvement in this partnership provides its students and faculty with valuable opportunities to contribute to wildlife conservation projects, advancing both academic and practical understanding of conservation methods. This collaboration also opens the door for RMUTSV to play a leadership role in conservation policy discussions and promote stronger protective measures for endangered species. Through these efforts, RMUTSV hopes to create a model of conservation-focused education and research that inspires similar initiatives in other institutions. In supporting elephant conservation, RMUTSV underscores its dedication to environmental protection and ecological stewardship, positioning itself as a key contributor to Thailand’s conservation goals. This strategic alliance with the National Elephant Institute not only strengthens RMUTSV’s conservation policies but also promotes a shared vision for a sustainable future for wildlife in Thailand.
