Asst. Prof. Dr. Thanakorn Damsud and his research team conducted a study titled “Photoprotective, Anti-Acne Bacterial, and Enzyme Inhibitory Activities (Tyrosinase, Elastase, and Hyaluronidase) of Extracts from Trang Pepper.”

The research aimed to explore the bioactive potential of Trang pepper cultivated in Thailand, focusing on its ability to protect the skin from UV radiation, combat acne-causing bacteria, enhance skin brightness, and delay skin aging. The team examined the ethanolic extract of Trang pepper for its sun protection efficiency, antibacterial properties, and inhibitory effects on tyrosinase, elastase, and hyaluronidase enzymes, as well as evaluated the viability of B16F10 melanoma cells after 72 hours of exposure.

Key findings include:

  • Sun protection: The extract showed an SPF value greater than 4, with certain samples exhibiting strong UV-protective potential.
  • Anti-acne activity: The extract effectively inhibited the growth of Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis RP, two primary bacteria responsible for acne formation.

These findings position Trang pepper extract as a high-potential natural ingredient for use in cosmetic and dermatological formulations, providing UV protection, anti-acne, skin-brightening, and anti-aging benefits—underscoring its promise as a value-added Thai botanical innovation for the skincare industry.
