On 20 June 2024, the Faculty of Architecture, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS), held a press conference for the project “Culture Smart City : Songkhla
Old Town” a city making initiative that leverages cultural capital through urban design
to catalyze creativity and, in honor of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, marks the auspicious occasion of her 90th birthday. The opening ceremony was presided over by
Mr. Amnuay Pinsuwan, Deputy Governor of Songkhla Province, and attended by
Mr. Wanchai Parinyasiri, Mayor of Songkhla City; Asst. Prof. Udon Namsen, Vice President of RUTS, Asst. Prof. Dr. Piyaporn Aromut, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, and
the project working team, at The Bed Vacation Rajamangkhla Hotel, Mueang District, Songkhla.
The project aims to enhance and uplift local businesses and industries in Songkhla Old Town by building upon the area’s cultural assets. As a local university, the Faculty of Architecture, RUTS, has received budgetary support to implement this initiative.
This phase focuses on developing Songkhla Old Town as a cultural model area through seven sub-projects
- Assessment and public consultation for the Cultural Model City development
- SONGKHLA CULTURAL ICONIC co-creation of a community-driven landmark sculpture
- Creative textile and fashion innovation from Old Town cultural capital advancing
the royal initiative “Thai Fabrics: Wear with Joy” of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, and sustaining the great royal aspirations of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother - Prototype 3D virtual urban environment
- Immersive Art design on virtual-environment platforms to promote cultural tourism in Songkhla Old Town
- Cultural Model City development: Songkhla Old Town (Culture Smart City: Songkhla Old Town)
- City festival “Songkhla Creative Arts & Culture Festival” in August, consolidating outcomes from all sub-projects
