On July 5, 2024, the Architecture Program, Faculty of Architecture, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS) organized a field learning activity for first-year students, exploring the architectural and cultural landscape of Songkhla Old Town. The study visit formed part of the Preparatory Program for First-Year Architecture Students, designed to strengthen foundational architectural knowledge and enhance understanding of spatial and cultural contexts before the start of formal design coursework.

The exploration began at the Red Mill – Hub Ho Hin Building, where students attended a briefing on the spatial and cultural values of Songkhla Old Town. They then walked along Nakhon Nok Road to visit Ban Ya Bon House, where local homeowners shared insights on adaptive reuse and architectural restoration of historical buildings. Students continued through the Old City Gate check-in route, learning about urban conservation and tourism identity in heritage spaces.

The next stops included:

  • Ban Bon Mosque, featuring an exhibition on the design of local religious architecture;
  • Wat Matchimawas (Wat Klang), a central Buddhist temple representing the area’s religious coexistence; and
  • Nang Ngam Road, where students visited Songkhla City Pillar Shrine, a Café Amazon adaptive reuse building, and indoor exhibitions on heritage-inspired contemporary design.
