In alignment with the Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS) biodiversity conservation policy, Dr. Prasert Nonthakarn from the Faculty of Science and Technology has implemented a practical conservation initiative in collaboration with the Khao Jom Peaw Forest Community. This project focuses on the protection and monitoring of the Great Argus (Argusianus argus), a bird species listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Recognizing the importance of this species as an indicator of healthy forest ecosystems, the project translates national biodiversity policy into community-level action. Regular monitoring of the Great Argus population is conducted by local residents under the guidance of Dr. Prasert and his research team. The initiative emphasizes community involvement in scientific observation and data recording. Through this participatory approach, the project strengthens local knowledge and a sense of stewardship toward wildlife. The Great Argus, known for its impressive plumage and courtship display, symbolizes the richness of Thailand’s forest biodiversity. The policy-to-action framework allows RUTS to promote conservation through education, research, and engagement. This collaboration demonstrates how science-based community partnerships can support the protection of threatened species.

Education plays a central role in ensuring the success of this conservation effort. Dr. Prasert and his team conduct training sessions and community talks to explain the ecological significance of the Great Argus and its role in maintaining forest balance. Residents learn that the presence of this species reflects a healthy, undisturbed ecosystem, making it a valuable asset to both nature and the community. Through visual presentations and field demonstrations, villagers gain skills in bird identification, habitat mapping, and data recording. The community now conducts monthly bird surveys to track population changes and behavioral patterns. Additionally, the research team collaborates with local schools to engage students in environmental education programs. These activities foster awareness and pride among young people, inspiring them to become the next generation of conservation advocates. By integrating scientific knowledge with local experience, the project builds trust and a shared sense of responsibility. The educational component ensures that conservation practices are sustained beyond the project’s timeline. This reflects RUTS’s mission to extend research impact into long-term community empowerment and environmental stewardship.

From these combined efforts, policy has effectively been transformed into local conservation action. The Khao Jom Peaw community, under guidance from RUTS, has officially designated sections of their forest as copulatory zones for the Great Argus to protect breeding grounds from human disturbance. Community patrols and controlled access areas have been established to ensure safety during the bird’s mating season. Bird photographers and ecotourists are now required to follow strict guidelines to minimize noise and habitat impact. This sustainable model balances wildlife conservation with responsible tourism, generating income while maintaining ecological integrity. The success of this initiative serves as an example of how local communities can take ownership of biodiversity protection when equipped with proper knowledge and policy support. Moreover, it strengthens the connection between academic research, environmental policy, and grassroots conservation. Through this partnership, Khao Jom Peaw Forest has become a living example of sustainable coexistence between humans and wildlife. The collaboration proves that when policy meets local action, biodiversity conservation becomes not only achievable but also deeply rooted in community values.
