The Thai Art Program of the Faculty of Architecture, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS), led third- and fourth-year students from the courses Thai Pattern Design and Thai Art on a field study trip to Wat Chontharasinghe (Wat Phithak Phandin Thai) in Narathiwat Province.

The visit aimed to enhance students’ understanding of Southern Thai mural paintings, traditional architecture, and cultural identity through on-site observation and learning.
Built during the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV), Wat Chontharasinghe is renowned for its unique architectural blend of Buddhist, Muslim, and Chinese influences, symbolizing the cultural harmony of the southern region.

The temple holds immense historical and national significance, as it played a crucial role in the 1901 territorial negotiation (R.S. 120 / 2441 B.E.), where its presence helped affirm Thailand’s sovereignty over the region-earning it the title “The Temple that Protected the Land of Thailand.”

In addition to the temple visit, students also visited Bang Nara Batik Group in Kaluwo Nuea Subdistrict, Mueang District, Narathiwat Province, where they observed and participated in traditional batik-making demonstrations, learning how local crafts integrate cultural wisdom with creative design practices.

This activity provided a holistic learning experience that deepened students’ appreciation for local art heritage, architecture, and craftsmanship, while fostering awareness of the importance of cultural preservation and creative continuity.

The Thai Art Field Study at Wat Chontharasinghe represents an integration of education, art, and heritage preservation. By immersing students in authentic cultural environments, the Faculty of Architecture at RUTS promotes experiential learning, cultural awareness, and creative responsibility-empowering future artists to contribute to the preservation and reinterpretation of Thai identity within the context of sustainable development.
