On Christmas night, 25 December 2024, students from the Animal Science and Smart Agriculture programs conducted a chicken harvest activity after a 35-day rearing period in a smart-controlled poultry house. This activity was part of an ongoing student food production and management program aimed at enhancing studentsโ food access, food security, and practical learning in sustainable animal agriculture.
The integrated activity included:
- Raising broiler chickens in a smart poultry house using automated environmental control systems.
- Harvesting the chickens after the grow-out period to be used as raw materials for student food programs and training.
- Developing student-led food production capacity, which contributes to affordable and nutritious food options on campus.
- Strengthening collaboration between the Animal Science and Smart Agriculture curricula through real-world applications.
This initiative is part of a broader student food security strategy that encourages students to produce and manage food resources sustainably, reducing food costs and increasing access to fresh protein sources within the university community.
The โMidnight Chicken Harvestโ project demonstrates how Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya empowers students to play an active role in alleviating food insecurity on campus. Through hands-on integrated poultry production, students gain real-world skills while contributing to a sustainable source of affordable protein for the university community.
