On January 23, 2024, Asst. Prof. Piyaporn Oramut, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, together with the faculty’s administrators and staff, attended the opening ceremony of “Song-Lae Pier” at the coastal area adjacent to the Songkhla Provincial Administrative Organization’s leased public property.

The ceremony was honored by Mr. Paijen Maksuwan, President of the Songkhla Provincial Administrative Organization, who presided over the official opening.
The “Song-Lae Pier” project was implemented under the Creative Economy Development through Innovation and Technology for Sustainable Marine Tourism Project, funded in the Fiscal Year 2023 (B.E. 2566).

Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya received financial support to develop a prototype model for new-generation coastal tourism in the Gulf of Thailand, promoting eco-tourism, enhancing the coastal tourism industry’s value chain, and supporting sustainable community development.

As part of this initiative, RUTS designed and installed a floating pontoon pier to serve as a safe, flexible, and environmentally friendly docking point for small tourist boats.
This pier not only facilitates eco-tourism accessibility but also enhances the image of Songkhla’s marine tourism industry, showcasing the integration of design innovation, sustainability, and local identity.
The project also serves as a learning and demonstration site for students, local communities, and tourism operators to understand sustainable coastal management, marine ecosystem protection, and creative economic development. The collaboration between the university and Songkhla PAO highlights how academic institutions can play a vital role in driving regional development through innovation, community partnership, and sustainable design.

The Song-Lae Pier Project contributes directly to the following, by improving access to public coastal spaces and promoting inclusive and sustainable tourism infrastructure that benefits both locals and visitors, by developing a prototype model for Coastal Tourism (Gulf of Thailand) that generates employment, stimulates local business opportunities, and strengthens the creative economy, and by promoting eco-friendly tourism practices and the use of a floating pontoon pier system that minimizes marine habitat disturbance and supports long-term conservation of Songkhla’s coastal ecosystems.
