Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS) recognizes the importance of promoting responsible and efficient water usage as part of its commitment to sustainability. With thousands of students, staff, and visitors using shared facilities daily, the university has implemented multiple strategies to encourage water-conscious behavior and reduce overall water consumption across all campuses.

1. Awareness and Engagement Campaigns

RUTS actively raises awareness about responsible water consumption through visible communication and educational materials placed in high-use areas such as restrooms, sinks, and laboratories. These include facts, reminders, and practical water-saving tips. Furthermore, the university utilizes social media platforms and digital channels to disseminate water conservation messages, share success stories, and inspire collective responsibility among faculty, students, staff, and visitors.

2. Water-Efficient and Sustainable Building Standards

All newly constructed and renovated campus buildings are designed to meet water and energy efficiency standards. These standards include the installation of low-flow faucets, dual-flush toilets, and water-efficient plumbing systems to minimize water consumption. Additionally, energy and environmental performance are enhanced through the use of LED lighting, improved insulation, and natural ventilation systems such as air-flow windows, which contribute to better indoor environmental quality. These design strategies collectively reduce water and energy usage while promoting comfort, health, and operational cost savings.

3. Wastewater Recycling and Greywater Reuse

To reduce freshwater demand, RUTS has implemented wastewater recycling systems that reclaim greywater from facilities such as toilets, canteens, and dormitories. Treated wastewater is reused for campus landscaping and irrigation purposes, ensuring sustainable and efficient use of reclaimed water. This initiative directly supports the university’s commitment to integrated water resource management and environmental stewardship.

4. Integration into Curriculum and Research

The university integrates water conservation topics into the university’s curriculum through academic modules and project-based learning on water awareness and sustainability. Students are encouraged to undertake practical projects focusing on water conservation, water reuse, and sustainable campus management. This approach not only enhances environmental education but also generates tangible outcomes that benefit the university community.

5. Enhancing Plumbing and Landscaping Efficiency

RUTS continues to upgrade its plumbing systems to minimize leakage and improve water distribution efficiency. In terms of landscaping, the university promotes the use of native and drought-tolerant plant species, combined with efficient irrigation technologies such as drip irrigation and soil moisture sensors. These measures significantly reduce water consumption while maintaining the aesthetic and ecological value of campus green spaces.

By implementing these strategies, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya is embedding water-conscious practices as an integral part of its institutional culture. The initiatives contribute to improved operational efficiency, reduced water consumption, and enhanced sustainability performance across campuses. Collectively, these actions reflect the university’s strong commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and to creating a more environmentally responsible and resource-efficient campus for future generations.
