In 2024, RUTS collaborated with Universities Partnership for the goals of sustainable development around research relating to SDG 1 to 17. For example, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS), in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), organised the 1st International Research Collaboration under the theme “IoT System Innovation, Smart Energy Management, and Wireless Sensor Network Research.” on 13th August 2024 at Faculty of Engineering, RUTS. This pioneering initiative brought together researchers and students from both institutions to foster innovation and knowledge exchange in emerging technologies that support sustainable development. The collaboration directly contributed to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). By integrating research on IoT-based systems and energy-efficient technologies, the project aimed to promote smart solutions that enhance energy sustainability, advance technological innovation, and strengthen international research networks between Thailand and Malaysia. The event focused on strengthen cooperation including 1) IoT system design and Prototyping to develop scalable IoT architectures for Smart city and Industrial applications. 2) Smart Energy and Sustainability to implement intelligent monitoring and demand-side management through IoT-enabled systems. 3) Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) to integrate communication, sensing, and data analytics into next generation connectivity.
The event was divided three sessions as follows: 1) Academic session including Smart metering and NB-IoT communication gateways, Edge-based AI and Cloud-integrated IoT data processing, and Real-world case studies on IoT using renewable energy systems was led by RUTS Engineering researchers. This session was participated in hands-on by both UniMAP academic staff and students to demonstrate and exchange research idea for future collaborative projects. 2) Future Direction: Conference Paper and Joint Publication, both institutions agreed to pursue joint publications and conference submissions emphasising IEE conferences, Journal papers focusing on IoT integration, WSN performance, and AI-assisted predictive maintenance. The collaboration encouraged co-authorship between RUTS lecturers and UniMAP postgraduate students to strengthen regional research impact. 3) Scholarship and Research Funding Opportunities, the collaboration explored funding opportunities as UniMAP and RUTS research funds for joint IoT prototype development and student exchange. This initiative aimed to support undergraduate students pursuing IoT-based research projects, international internships, and graduate scholarships under bilateral cooperation.
As a result, The 1st International Research Collaboration between Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS) and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) marked a significant milestone in advancing cross-border research and innovation. Through the integration of IoT system innovation, smart energy management, and wireless sensor network research, the collaboration demonstrated how academic partnerships can generate practical solutions to real-world sustainability challenges. The joint efforts of both institutions not only strengthened research capacity and technological expertise but also directly contributed to the realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly in promoting clean energy, fostering innovation, and building resilient international partnerships. This initiative sets a strong foundation for future collaborative research that continues to drive regional innovation and sustainable development across Southeast Asia.
