RUTS Policy for Addressing Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing in Alignment with SDG 14
October 13, 2025

Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing is recognized as a pervasive global issue. This illicit activity carries significant detrimental environmental, economic, and social consequences, primarily by contributing to overfishing and undermining the sustainability of legal fisheries. Mitigating this problem requires an imperative multi-sectoral strategy focused on preventing IUU products from entering established markets. These commodities are formally defined as fish and marine resources that have been harvested, transported, processed, or sold in direct violation of national or international laws. This definition specifically covers resources acquired using destructive methods (such as bottom trawling or cyanide fishing), or those sourced from protected areas or without the requisite legal permits

Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS) is actively working to advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through both its policies and operations. To support this mission, RUTS has implemented a policy that bans the use of products derived from illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The policy is strict: it prohibits the procurement, sale, and consumption of IUU fishery products on campus. All stakeholder at the university is responsible for making sure that all fishery products come only from reputable suppliers who can verify that their goods are both legal and sustainable.
