Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RMUTSV) has transformed the “Song-Lae Pier” initiative in Songkhla Province into a living classroom that bridges academic learning with real-world community development. The project not only showcases innovation in marine infrastructure but also serves as an experiential learning hub for students, researchers, and local residents to collaboratively develop knowledge that uplifts coastal livelihoods.

Through interdisciplinary learning programs, RMUTSV integrates subjects such as marine science, engineering, economics, and environmental management into field-based education at the pier. Students participate in applied research, community engagement, and problem-solving activities that directly address local challenges—such as improving eco-tourism systems, creating sustainable income models, and enhancing environmental awareness.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suwitch Thanyasiri emphasized that the project aligns with the university’s vision to produce graduates who are socially responsible and equipped with practical knowledge for sustainable development. Students gain firsthand experience in working with local stakeholders, designing environmentally friendly tourism innovations, and applying classroom theories to tangible community impact.

The initiative supports SDG 1: No Poverty, particularly targets 1.4.1 and 1.4.3, by enabling inclusive access to knowledge and empowering both students and communities with the skills to achieve financial resilience. It stands as a model of how higher education can directly contribute to poverty reduction through education, innovation, and local collaboration.
