The Faculty of Science and Technology, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS) collaborated with the local community to survey and develop a database of forests and green areas at Wat Tha Phae Community Forest, located in Thung Song District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. This area remains a rich and ecologically valuable natural environment, playing a vital role in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem balance.
The initiative aimed to collect data on forest resources, plant diversity, and record information about significant heritage trees (Big Trees) that serve as both natural legacies and symbols of the deep connection between people and forests in the local community.
During the field survey, the team identified numerous century-old trees, including Hopea odorata (Takian Thong), Banyan (Sai Yai), and Dipterocarpus alatus (Yang Na). These towering trees provide shade, carbon sequestration, and habitats for birds and small animals, acting as the “lungs of the city.” Beyond their environmental value, they represent local wisdom and community collaboration in protecting forests for long-term sustainability in Thung Song.
The collected data will be used to develop a Natural Resource and Green Area Database for Thung Song City, supporting long-term environmental conservation planning through cooperation among academic institutions, local government agencies, and community members. This initiative promotes awareness, knowledge sharing, and environmental stewardship as part of the community’s ongoing commitment to sustainable development.
This activity marks another significant step for the Faculty of Science and Technology, RUTS, in applying scientific knowledge for community benefit and strengthening the concept of “Science for Society and the Environment.” It also reflects a dedication to preserving the beauty and ecological integrity of the Wat Tha Phae Community Forest for future generations.
