On June 5, 2024, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS), Trang Campus, through the Southern Royal-Initiated Waste Management and Wastewater Treatment Technology Transfer Center, organized the World Environment Day 2024 celebration under the theme “Youth Awakening to Save the Warming World.” The event was held in collaboration with various internal university departments and external agencies, featuring exhibitions, learning stations, and hands-on activities designed to raise awareness about global environmental challenges.

Ms. Boonjongrak Jiwton, Environmental Officer, explained that this initiative aimed to highlight the importance of addressing climate change, a pressing global issue caused by the rise in greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions have led to significant impacts such as extreme heat, heavy rainfall, more intense storms, floods, landslides, coral bleaching, and polar ice melting. The event underscored the need for collective participation in environmental conservation and encouraged action beginning with youth engagement.

More than 13 schools in Sikao District participated in the event, where students gained knowledge and awareness of climate change through over 10 educational and interactive activities, including:

  • Environmental knowledge exhibitions and learning booths
  • Eco-friendly invention and recycling contests
  • Quizzes and games with prizes
  • Soap-making and paper mâché workshops
  • “Lucky Star” environmental activity
  • Student performances such as singing and live Nang Talung (traditional shadow puppet) shows

Beyond engaging school students, the event also created valuable learning and service opportunities for RUTS students, particularly those from the Faculty of Science and Fisheries Technology and the Environmental Science Program. They took part as facilitators, organizers, and mentors—sharing their academic knowledge, practical experiences, and environmental insights with younger students. This hands-on involvement allowed university students to apply what they have learned in real-world contexts, strengthen their communication and teamwork skills, and gain a deeper understanding of community-based environmental education.

Through this experiential learning approach, RUTS students developed the ability to connect academic knowledge with real environmental challenges—an essential component in fostering sustainable behavior and leadership among future professionals.

This initiative not only aligns with SDG 13: Climate Action and SDG 14: Life Below Water, but also strongly supports SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation by promoting awareness of sustainable waste and wastewater management practices, as well as SDG 4: Quality Education, through experiential and service learning opportunities that bridge academic study with community impact.

By integrating learning, service, and environmental stewardship, RUTS Trang Campus continues to serve as a model institution in promoting sustainability education and empowering young people to take meaningful action toward a greener, more resilient future.
