Freshwater ecosystems are globally dynamic, diverse, and complex. Despite occupying less than 1% of the planet’s surface, lakes, rivers, and reservoirs are home to 10% of the world’s animal species. These ecosystems supply water for residential, agricultural, industrial, and transportation purposes, thereby contributing to the well-being of humans. Unfortunately, excessive utilization, habitat degradation, invasive species, climate fluctuations, water redirection, and impoundment pose significant challenges to freshwater ecosystems.

Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS) has a dedicated mission to enhance public understanding of freshwater ecosystems, the preservation of coastal biodiversity, and the promotion of sustainable fisheries development, all achieved through the facilities of the RUTS Trang Aquarium.

The aquarium is divided into two sections: an indoor section with 61 display tanks for freshwater fish and coral fish, and an outdoor pond that displays freshwater animals, marine animals, and amphibians found in tidal and coastal zones. However, freshwater ecosystems take up one-third of the exhibition space. The majority of the freshwater fish on display are Thai freshwater fish.

The RUTS Trang Aquarium serves as a popular destination for school groups and families while also serving as a valuable resource for researchers and conservationists. Each year, the RUTS aquarium attracts more than 20,000 visitors, including domestic and international tourists as well as students. Its exhibits are designed with the primary goal of increasing public understanding and appreciation of freshwater ecosystems, coastal biodiversity conservation, and the promotion of sustainable fisheries development. The RUTS aquarium plays a pivotal role in fostering a connection between people and the aquatic environment, enabling a deeper connection to the natural world. While its ultimate goal is to provide formal educational opportunities, it also fulfills a significant mission by offering informal education to its visitors, local schools, and undergraduate students. Through its initiatives, RUTS Aquaria actively contributes to environmental education and aquatic life conservation.

In summary, the RUTS Trang Aquarium plays a pivotal role in education and conservation, catering to diverse audiences and partnering with educational institutions to advance the understanding and preservation of freshwater ecosystems in Thailand.
