The university has achieved success in its research and has changed the traditional way of abalone cultivation by using basket and three-tiered plastic basket systems to increase production by more than 7-8 times. According to Dr. Supatcha Chuasaijao, a lecturer in the faculty of science and fisheries technology, the development of the high-density oyster farming system is aimed at boosting the economy in Trang and Songkla Province.
The new method involves cultivating oyster in basket and three-tiered sliding plastic crate systems to increase production in natural water sources (ponds) significantly. This has led to an increase in oyster production to around 7,000 – 8,000 individuals per crate, up from the previous method of attaching abalones to cement posts, which yielded only 1,000 – 2,000 individuals per crate. Previously, local residents had to go out by boat to collect oyster in their natural habitat near rocky areas or the roots of mangroves, measuring 4-5 centimeters.
