The University Business Incubator (UBI), under the Office of Innovation Management and Technology Transfer (IMTT), conducted a business concept competition. The competition’s objective was to encourage the development of an entrepreneurial ecosystem among members of the university student body. This project provided students with the opportunity to gain practical experience through participation in pitching competitions. These competitions provided students with the opportunity to refine their ideas, develop them into enterprises, and potentially secure funding from external sources.
Students from all faculties and campuses participated in the business concept pitching competition, submitting a total of 61 concepts. This competition garnered a lot of interest from students. The purpose of this exercise was to choose the top ten teams that would have the greatest potential to acquire money from outside sources in order to pursue their particular initiatives. Twenty exceptional projects from among these submissions received the “Best Business Idea” award.
The twenty awarded projects reflected five distinct target business sectors:
- Food and Agriculture Industry
- Medicine and public health
- Tourism Industry
- Lifestyle
- Industry
A business concept competition yielded several positive outcomes. It provided students with hands-on experience pitching their ideas, helping them refine essential skills like communication, problem solving, and business planning and thereby preparing them for real-world entrepreneurial challenges. The event facilitated the transformation of innovative concepts into viable startups, with the top teams developing business plans capable of attracting external funding. Participants also benefited from networking opportunities, connecting with peers, mentors, and industry professionals, which could lead to future collaborations and partnerships. Overall, the event strengthened the university’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, fostering a culture of innovation and encouraging the organization of future initiatives, workshops, and incubator programs to support aspiring student entrepreneurs.
