The Office of Innovation Management and Technology Transfer (IMTT) at Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS) has been a pioneer in promoting startup companies derived from the university’s own research and innovations. Through a series of strategic initiatives, IMTT has actively fostered the development of university spin-offs, serving as a bridge between academic research and commercialization.

Within the framework of RUTS’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), “University Spin-offs” are defined as companies established to commercialize intellectual property (IP) originating from within the institution, in which the university maintains partial ownership. In 2024, a total of 20 spin-off companies were successfully registered to utilize RUTS-generated IP. Figure 1(a) illustrates the IP Camp conducted under the Project for the Development of Small and Medium Enterprises Driven by Innovation toward New Business Models (P25). The program aims to strengthen the capabilities of university researchers by enhancing their skills in IP management and research commercialization, as well as by promoting the transformation of research and innovation into tangible IP assets and applicable technologies. This initiative also supports researchers in obtaining future funding from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI). As a result, ten university spin-offs were established in 2023 and continued their operations in 2024, as shown in Figure 1(b).

Meanwhile, another ten spin-offs were established under the Project on Curriculum Development for Innovation Management in the Food Industry toward Professional Entrepreneurship, implemented through the Reinventing University Program for the Development of Excellence in Higher Education Institutions and Advanced Workforce Development, as illustrated in Figure 2(a). This initiative fostered collaboration between RUTS researchers and entrepreneurs, leading to the commercial utilization of RUTS’s intellectual property (IP). The ten spin-offs resulting from this project are presented in Figure 2(b).

As shown in Figure 1 and 2, these show a clear reflection of the university’s growing innovation capacity and its commitment to transforming research into real-world impact.

RUTS has devoted substantial effort to building a sustainable spin-off ecosystem, recognizing it as a key mechanism for strengthening the university’s Intellectual Property (IP) ecosystem. These efforts not only promote the practical application of research outcomes but also create new economic value, enhance institutional visibility, and cultivate an innovation-driven culture within and beyond the university. As a result, RUTS’s IP assets are increasingly being brought into public awareness, demonstrating how academic knowledge can contribute directly to societal development and regional economic growth.
