RUTS Researchers Win Gold Medals and a WIIPA Special Award for Rubber-Based Innovations at INTARG® 2025, Katowice, Republic of Poland

Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS), through the Office of Innovation Management and Technology Transfer, supported two researchers to compete and exhibit their research, inventions and innovations at the 18th International Invention and Innovation Show (INTARG® 2025), held on 3–5 June 2025 at the International Congress Centre (MCK), Katowice, Republic of Poland, with support from the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT). INTARG® is organized by Eurobusiness-Haller® and the Haller Pro Inventio Foundation and presented around 300 inventions and innovations from more than 20 countries. The participation aimed to promote RUTS research and innovation internationally, test the commercial potential of the inventions with international juries, investors and businesses, and strengthen international networks. Both RUTS inventions add value to Thai natural rubber, one of the key economic crops of southern Thailand.

1. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thanakorn Damsud – “HypoPatch Plaster”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thanakorn Damsud of the Faculty of Science and Technology presented the “HypoPatch Plaster: Innovative Low-Protein Latex Patch Infused with Mangosteen Peel Ethosome”. Conventional wound plasters made from natural rubber latex can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions, mainly due to latex proteins. The HypoPatch Plaster addresses this problem by using low-protein natural latex combined with an ethosome delivery system containing mangosteen peel extract, a by-product of the fruit industry with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. The result is a natural, skin-safe plaster with a low risk of allergy that helps reduce inflammation, suitable for sensitive skin and consumers seeking natural and organic products. A petty patent application has been filed for the invention.

At INTARG® 2025, the HypoPatch Plaster received two awards: the Gold Medal from INTARG® 2025, Republic of Poland, and the WIIPA Special Award from the World Invention Intellectual Property Associations (WIIPA), Taiwan. The invention also received a Certificate of Appreciation from the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) for its contribution to the show and the 2nd runner-up award from the Rubber Authority of Thailand (RAOT).

2. Asst. Prof. Dr. Thanwit Naemsai – “Low-Carbon Rubber Flooring for Elderly”

Asst. Prof. Dr. Thanwit Naemsai of the Faculty of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Program, whose research focuses on thermo-fluids, energy saving and thermally insulated materials, presented the “Low-Carbon Rubber Flooring for Elderly”. Thailand and many other countries are becoming aged societies, and falls are a major cause of fractures and serious injuries among older adults. At the same time, industry is seeking environmentally friendly materials with better performance to meet the needs of a low-carbon society. The invention is a double-layer rubber flooring tile that combines two materials to improve impact absorption and durability, and offers additional features such as sound insulation, fire resistance and greater design flexibility for homes and care settings for the elderly. The research team also assessed the greenhouse-gas emissions of the production process to confirm its low-carbon performance, and the work is being developed for technology adoption and commercialization with support from the RUTS Office of Innovation Management and Technology Transfer.

At INTARG® 2025, the Low-Carbon Rubber Flooring for Elderly received a Gold Medal, recognizing its innovation, practical value for an ageing society and potential for commercialization.

These achievements demonstrate the role of RUTS, through the Office of Innovation Management and Technology Transfer, in developing research into inventions with industrial and commercial potential and presenting them on the international stage. By transforming Thai natural rubber and agricultural by-products into innovative, higher-value health and building products, the two inventions contribute directly to SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, while also supporting good health and well-being, responsible production, climate action and international partnerships.
