On May 23, 2025, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS), Trang Campus, through its Faculty of Engineering and Technology, collaborated with PUMPUI (Kuang Pei San Food Products PCL) to develop and deliver an environmentally friendly innovation entitled “Biodegradable Plant Pots from Biomass Ash.” The initiative was led by Khwancheewa Yongstar, Associate Dean for Student Development, together with three undergraduate students from the Construction Engineering program, with project funding provided by the industrial partner. The project aimed to promote sustainable waste management, resource efficiency, and circular economy practices by converting industrial biomass ash generated from the Pum Pui canned fish factory in Trang Province into biodegradable plant pots. The biomass ash originated from the combustion of agricultural residues, including rice husks, sugarcane bagasse, and wood waste. Key activities included student-led research, product development, utilization of industrial by-products, and the production and delivery of 100 biodegradable plant pots to the company, represented by Pawita Toh Tubtiang, Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee and Director of Corporate Communications. The key outcomes included the successful development of a value-added product prototype, practical application of circular economy principles, strengthened university–industry collaboration, and hands-on learning opportunities for students. The innovation offers a potential alternative to conventional plastic nursery bags, contributing to plastic waste reduction and more sustainable resource utilization. Overall, the project demonstrates how university–industry partnerships can transform industrial waste into environmentally responsible products while enhancing students’ innovation competencies and supporting sustainable industrial development.
