International Collaboration in Aquatic Data Collection and Environmental Monitoring

Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS) collaborates with international universities to strengthen scientific data collection, environmental monitoring, and knowledge exchange related to aquatic ecosystems and sustainable aquaculture. Through joint fieldwork, laboratory activities, and practical training, RUTS brings together international researchers, academics, and students to collect and examine biological and environmental information. In 2025, these efforts included collaboration with the University of Latvia on aquatic biodiversity data collection and the Tropical Aquaculture Camp involving universities from Malaysia and Vietnam, with activities focusing on water quality testing and aquatic animal health assessment.

RUTS Collaborates with the University of Latvia on Aquatic Data Collection and Marine Ecosystem Studies

From 8 to 22 April 2025, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS), through its Faculty of Science and Fisheries Technology and Natural Resources and Environment Institute, collaborated with the University of Latvia under the Erasmus+ Programme: Learning Mobility for Higher Education Students and Staff. The programme involved four visiting academics and researchers from the University of Latvia, Dr. Matiss Zagars, Dr. Ingrida Andrsone, Dr. Agnija Skuja, and Dr. Ivars Putnis, who conducted classroom teaching, field data collection, and laboratory activities with first- and second-year Marine Science students at RUTS Trang Campus.

The activities focused on aquatic ecosystems, fisheries resources, and environmental management in freshwater, river, lake, and marine environments. As part of the joint fieldwork, the visiting researchers and RUTS students collected fish samples, identified fish species, and recorded biological data in the mangrove area at RUTS. The researchers also provided practical instruction in fish and plankton sampling and sample analysis, enabling students to develop skills in collecting and examining aquatic biological data. The programme included field visits to explore seagrass habitats around Koh Libong and coral reef ecosystems around Koh Kradan in Trang Province.

These activities strengthened international academic collaboration in aquatic biological data collection, species identification, and scientific data recording, while promoting knowledge exchange and practical scientific skills relevant to understanding marine biodiversity and aquatic ecosystems.

RUTS Strengthens International Collaboration in Aquatic Data Collection through Tropical Aquaculture Camp 2025

From 9 to 13 June 2025, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS), through its Faculty of Science and Fisheries Technology, organised the RUTS and UMT International Collaboration Camp 2025 (Tropical Aquaculture Camp) at Trang Campus. The programme brought together students from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Malaysia; Can Tho University and Nha Trang University, Vietnam; and RUTS to participate in academic exchanges and practical activities related to aquaculture, aquatic animal health, and environmental monitoring.

A key component of the programme involved practical training in water quality testing and shrimp disease examination. Participants were divided into groups and rotated between the two activities, gaining hands-on experience in water quality assessment and aquatic animal health examination under the guidance of RUTS academic staff. These activities introduced practical approaches to measuring water quality and examining shrimp health, both of which are important for collecting scientific information related to aquatic environments and sustainable aquaculture.

The programme also included an aquaculture workshop, a lecture on shrimp culture in Thailand, and visits to the Trang Coastal Aquaculture Research and Development Center and aquaculture facilities at RUTS Trang Campus. Participants explored ornamental fish production and Biofloc technology for shrimp culture, exchanging knowledge on aquaculture practices, aquatic resource management, and technologies supporting sustainable production.

Through these collaborative activities, RUTS and its international partners strengthened academic cooperation in aquatic environmental assessment and aquaculture-related data gathering. The practical sessions provided opportunities for international participants to apply scientific testing methods and develop skills relevant to collecting and interpreting environmental and aquatic animal health information.
