Reducing Plastic Waste on Campus through Policy, Waste Separation, and Environmental Education
Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya has established a policy to reduce plastic waste on its campuses. Under the RUTS Life on Land Policy (Revised Edition), A.D. 2025, the university promotes measures including reducing single-use plastics, encouraging the use of reusable products, promoting waste separation and recycling, and raising awareness of responsible consumption among students, staff, vendors, and visitors. To support the implementation of this policy, the university provides designated waste-separation points across the campus for the collection of plastic waste and other waste categories. These facilities enable campus users to separate recyclable plastics from general waste, supporting appropriate recovery and recycling rather than disposal.
On 5 June 2025, RUTS Trang Campus, through the Resource and Environmental Management Programme of the Faculty of Science and Fisheries Technology, collaborated with the Southern Technology Transfer Centre for Waste Disposal and Wastewater Treatment under the Royal Initiative and network partners to organize World Environment Day 2025. The event, held under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution: Ending Global Plastic Pollution,” involved university administrators, lecturers, staff, students, and primary- and secondary-school students from Sikao District. It promoted individual and collective responsibility for reducing waste generation, separating waste at source, reusing materials, and conserving natural resources.
The programme included learning activities on waste separation, recycling, and transforming waste or discarded materials into useful products, supported by exhibition booths from 17 organizations. A recycled-waste fancy-dress competition and an environmental discussion further encouraged participants to reduce waste and choose reusable materials. Together with the campus waste-separation points, these activities translate the university’s plastic-waste reduction policy into daily practice and environmental education, helping to reduce plastic waste sent to disposal while strengthening long-term responsible consumption and waste-management behaviour among the university and local community.
