Bird Conservation Learning with Thung Song Community

On 26 January 2025, from 08:00 to 12:00, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya collaborated with Thung Song Municipality to organise the Learning to Love and Conserve Birds: Bird Walk activity. Dr. Prasert Nonthakarn served as the activity educator and guided participants in learning about birds and their ecological importance. The activity was held at Sirindhorn Botanic Garden, Thung Song, a green space that provides habitat for both resident and migratory birds. The programme was organised during a period suitable for bird observation, when migratory birds may be found alongside local bird species. It aimed to promote environmental learning, bird conservation awareness, and shared responsibility for protecting local land ecosystems among schools, communities, and families.

The activity consisted of a guided Bird Walk in the botanic garden. Dr. Prasert Nonthakarn introduced participants to basic bird-watching methods, including careful observation of bird characteristics, behavior, habitat use, and bird calls. Participants learned about the differences between resident birds and migratory birds, as well as the importance of suitable habitats for their survival. The educator also explained ecological roles of birds, such as supporting seed dispersal, pollination, insect population control, and ecosystem balance. The outdoor learning activity enabled teachers, students, youth, families, and community members to observe birds directly in their natural environment. It also encouraged discussion and knowledge exchange between the university, Thung Song Municipality, and local participants.

More than 100 participants, including teachers and students from Thung Song, local community members, youth, and families from Surat Thani Province, participated in the Bird Walk. The activity increased participants’ awareness of bird diversity and the importance of conserving habitats for resident and migratory bird species. Participants developed basic skills in bird observation and gained a clearer understanding of how birds contribute to the health and balance of land ecosystems. The collaboration strengthened relationships between Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya, Thung Song Municipality, schools, and local communities. Overall, the activity promoted community participation in biodiversity conservation and supported shared stewardship of local green spaces in alignment with SDG 15: Life on Land.
