Developing Future Sustainable Tourism Entrepreneurs through Community-Based Learning
From 18-22 August 2025, the College of Hospitality and Tourism, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS), hosted the RUTS and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) Collaboration Camp 2025 (Tourism Camp). Led by Asst. Prof. Fapilai Taweesinsopa, the programme brought together 85 lecturers and students from RUTS and UUM, including participants from the Faculty of Liberal Arts, the College of Industrial Technology and Management, and the College of Hospitality and Tourism. The camp served as an international educational programme that enabled Thai and international students to exchange knowledge with tourism communities, strengthen practical tourism skills, and develop perspectives needed to become responsible tourism practitioners and entrepreneurs.
The programme integrated academic discussion, environmental learning, and community-based tourism experiences. At Chao Mai Beach, participants took part in a beach clean-up and nature-learning activity, which promoted responsibility for coastal tourism areas and awareness of the environmental impacts of tourism activities. Participants also visited Bor Hin Farmstay to learn directly from the local tourism community about local ways of life, community-based tourism, and sustainable tourism practices. Through the Batik Dyeing Workshop, Thai dessert cooking, Thai festival craft activities, and cultural exchange, students learned how local cultural heritage, traditional knowledge, and community identity can be respectfully integrated into tourism products and experiences.
The camp further developed sustainable tourism-management skills through the Eco Reflection Showcase, Discover Diving: Theory and Practice, and the Student Project Pitch on Sustainable Marine Tourism. These activities encouraged students to reflect on responsible use of coastal, marine, and community tourism areas; develop creative solutions; and consider how tourism can support local livelihoods while conserving natural and cultural resources. By combining learning from tourism communities with international academic collaboration, RUTS equip Thai and international students with knowledge, practical experience, and sustainable values that can be applied in their future roles as tourism entrepreneurs and destination-management professionals.
