4. Title: Transforming Plastic Waste into Innovation: RMUTS Upcycles Bottle Lids into Functional Chair Seats
5. Activity/Implementation Date: 1 August 2024 – 28 Februare 2025
6. Responsible Unit: Faculty of Science and Technology
7. News Content:
Mr. Anuchit Wichianchom, an instructor in the Faculty of Science and Technology at Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RMUTS), has successfully spearheaded an innovative upcycling initiative to transform discarded plastic bottle lids into durable chair seats. This creative project addresses the growing environmental challenge of single-use plastic pollution through practical community-focused engineering. By turning waste materials into valuable assets, the endeavor reinforces the institution's commitment to long-term environmental sustainability. The initiative showcases how academic expertise can be directly applied to solve local ecological problems effectively. Ultimately, this undertaking highlights the university's proactive role in fostering a circular economy at the grassroots level.
The project execution involved a systematic, hands-on methodology tailored to maximize material efficiency and product durability. The team first collected 20 kilograms of plastic bottle lids from various sources to secure an adequate supply of raw materials. Next, they systematically studied optimal molding processes by varying temperatures and calculating the precise quantity of lids required for each single chair seat. Once these ideal technical parameters were identified, the molded plastic components were securely assembled onto sturdy chair frames. Finally, a total of 20 completed chairs were formally donated to the Na Mai Phai Subdistrict Administrative Organization for practical community use.
This successful initiative clearly demonstrates Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya's active policy and operational capability in comprehensive plastic waste management. By leveraging technology and innovation, the project effectively minimizes plastic waste from everyday activities and diverts harmful materials from local landfills. Furthermore, it adds substantial value to discarded items while fostering regional economic growth aligned with eco-friendly development principles. The donation of the 20 chairs directly benefits local residents, proving that environmental stewardship can simultaneously serve public community needs. Through such dedicated efforts, RMUTS continues to validate its mission of driving sustainable development and resource efficiency through science.
