Plastic pollution is a major threat to marine ecosystems, human health, and coastal economies. More than 14 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean annually, accounting for approximately 80% of marine debris.

Major sources include poorly managed waste, industrial activities, construction, and illegal dumping. Marine animals may ingest plastic or become entangled in debris, leading to injuries, digestive obstruction, starvation, and death. Plastics may also release hazardous chemicals that accumulate in marine food webs and potentially reach humans through seafood consumption. In addition, marine debris damages fishing gear, reduces fishery productivity, and degrades coastal landscapes, negatively affecting tourism and local livelihoods.

Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS) is committed to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through its policies and operations. The University has established policies, action plans, and activities to reduce plastic waste and marine litter. These efforts are implemented by students, faculty and staff, and in collaboration with various RUTS partners.

On 23 September 2025, RUTS staff and students exhibited event for highlighting initiatives and achievements of government agencies, private organizations, and local communities. The event included an International Coastal Cleanup Day activity, exhibitions of community- and network-based projects, and a creative innovation competition focused on marine debris.

More than 250 participants attended, including representatives from Coastal Resources Office 7, the Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Center in Trang, the Trang Provincial Fisheries Office, the Trang Provincial Red Cross Chapter, local administrative organizations, and coastal schools. The event also received strong support from the Trang Small-Scale Fisherfolk Association, Trang Tourism and Hotel Association, coastal community networks, Andaman Foundation, and Sri Trang Agro-Industry Public Company Limited.
